Gum diseases are serious infections of the gums and if left untreated can lead to tooth loss or more serious dental conditions or even heart disease. Gum disease, also known as “periodontal diseases", are diseases that involves the inflammation of the gingiva (or more commonly known as gums). Periodontal disease or gum disease may develop painlessly. A few signs and symptoms of gum disease may even develop in the later phase of the disease. Even if the signs and symptoms of gum diseases are faint, the condition is not without warning signs. Some signs and symptoms of gum diseases may point to other types of disease.
If your gums bleed during or after you brush your teeth is the most common sign and symptoms of gum disease. Gums that are red, swollen or tender are also sure signs of gum disease. The formation of pockets between the teeth and gums, loose and shifting teeth, persistent bad tastes, bad breath or halitosis and receding gum line are just a few of the more serious symptoms of gum disease.
Even if you do not detect any signs or symptoms of gum disease, you may still have some degree of periodontal diseases. Some people are not aware that they already have periodontal disease because the periodontal disease that they have is only around certain teeth, such as teeth that are found at the back of the mouth. Only a dentist or periodontist can make out and conclude the progression of the gum disease.
Prevention is the best treatment for gum disease. Regular oral hygiene is the best way to prevent gum disease. Brushing your teeth properly at least twice a day is advised. Flossing daily and inter-dental brushes is highly recommended. Using an antibacterial mouthwash along with regular oral hygiene reduces the risks of having gum diseases as well as regular dental check ups and professional dental cleaning. During a routine dental check up your dentist will remove the plaque and tartar of your gum line, thus, minimizing the risks of gum disease.
If you detect early signs of gum disease, visit your dentist right away for proper dental check up. Do not let gum disease take away the smile on your face. If you have any doubts regarding your oral health, do not hesitate to visit your dentist. Your dentist will give you the best advice concerning your oral problems. Gum diseases could lead to heart problems like artery blockage and stroke, so always bear in mind that early detection of gum disease may save your life.
